Review: Brunch at The Selfish Bull

Sited beneath the majestic Ain Dubai on Bluewaters, The Selfish Bull is a modern American bar and grill that has introduced a new Sunday brunch experience by the coast.

As soon as you walk into the setting, you’re swept away by the sophisticated décor in shades of emerald and splashes of pink, burnt orange and charcoal black. Even though most seats at the restaurant overlook the stunning Bluewaters coastline and beyond, the ones just by the window offer the best view. If you’re lucky enough to reserve one, do take a minute and soak in the glorious vistas outside and ahead.

The highlights:

We opted to begin with a platter of meaty molluscs, that arrived with a mignonette sauce; and each luscious Fine de claire oyster was polished in no time. Pausing to sip on tomato-infused concoctions and house beverages, we were off to a fine start.

The brunch, a four-course feast, has you picking your favourite from the salad, starter, main and dessert section. With each section offering between two to four choices and between our table of four diners, we happily got to sample each dish off the menu.

A Wedge salad with baby gem lettuce, corn, radish and cherry tomatoes, topped with a pistachio dressing offered a lively crunch; the Burrata and heirloom tomatoes salad with rocket leaves, balsamic and pesto was a creamy and fresh classic, one that you can rarely go wrong with; and the Shrimp and avocado salad was teeming with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, Cajun shrimp and flavours from a lemon vinaigrette.

Portions are generous at this impressive brunch and thus, we recommend taking a break between each course. Upbeat tunes from a DJ will have you swaying to the beat, interspersed with soulful notes from a live singer.

Starters offer plenty for every palate, where you can choose to indulge in a French onion soup, served with Swiss cheese croutons or a silken Steak tartare with Dijon mustard, shallots, chives, capers and a slice of toast to accompany. Alternatively, if you desire crisp seafood creations, tuck into servings of Firecracker prawns or Calamari rings with chipotle mayo.

Mains followed with a choice from four dishes: Grilled corn-fed baby chicken on a bed of whipped potatoes with mushroom sauce, a decadent Truffle risotto, Black angus striploin with asparagus and potatoes and an 18-hour, fall-off-the-bone Braised beef short rib with homemade barbecue sauce that was absolutely sublime.

Try and save space for dessert if you have a sweet tooth. The Brownie à la mode was a sinful treat; and the cheesecake light and fluffy.

The verdict:

Looking for a fabulous brunch with spectacular sights of the glittering Dubai skyline? The Selfish Bull offers great fare, vibes and views.
