In this edition of Homegrown Tables, where we spotlight local businesses, Co-Founder and Head Chef Kameel Rasyid shares how bkry continues to serve its community
What made you decide to keep the bakery open during this time?
At bkry, the decision came down to purpose. We’ve always seen bkry as more than a bakery, it’s a space where people pause, reconnect, and find a sense of comfort. During uncertain moments, that role feels even more important.
We wanted to continue showing up for our community in a way that feels genuine, through something as simple yet meaningful as fresh bread, warm pastries, and a familiar environment. Keeping our doors open wasn’t just about business; it was about being present.
Have you noticed guests approaching dining out differently lately?
Definitely. There’s a noticeable shift toward intentionality. Guests are more mindful about where they go and what they choose; they’re seeking spaces that feel safe, calming, and honest.
At the same time, there’s a deeper appreciation for the experience itself. It’s less about rushing through a meal and more about slowing down, enjoying the moment, and reconnecting with food, with people, and even with themselves.
Any shifts in orders – are guests gravitating toward dishes or flavours that feel more comforting or familiar?
Yes, very much so. We’re seeing a strong pull toward nostalgic and comforting flavours, things that feel grounding. Classics like buttery croissants, soft sourdough, and simple, well-executed pastries have become even more meaningful.
There’s also a renewed appreciation for quality ingredients and craftsmanship. Guests are gravitating toward items that feel honest and thoughtfully made, rather than overly complex.
Is there a dish on your menu right now that feels especially meaningful to you?
Our sourdough bread stands out the most right now. It’s something we’ve always taken pride in, but in moments like these, it carries even more meaning. It represents patience, care, and time qualities that feel particularly relevant. It’s simple, yet deeply comforting, and it connects people in a very universal way.
How are you and your team showing up for each other during this time – what steps or gestures help keep morale strong?
For us, it starts with communication and empathy. We’ve created an environment where everyone feels heard and supported, because the team is the heart of everything we do.
Small gestures go a long way, checking in with one another, sharing meals together, and celebrating even the smallest wins. There’s a strong sense of unity, and that’s what keeps morale high. When people feel valued, it naturally reflects in the energy of the space.
What would you like to say to your community in the UAE at this moment?
We’re incredibly grateful. The support, trust, and kindness we’ve received from the community mean everything to us. We want our guests to know that bkry will always be a space for them, a place to slow down, find comfort, and feel a sense of belonging. Moments like these remind us how important community truly is, and we’re honoured to be a small part of it.
